If you're a K-drama fan like me, you probably want to visit Seoul and taste all those delicious-looking meals that you see in the dramas at least once in your life. But even if you aren't a fan, fear not, cause your girl over here will list a few dishes which you should try once you visit South Korea. Without further ado, let's start our yummylicious list of must try Korean dishes:

List of must try korean dishes

1. Ramyeon

First up on our list is almost everyone's favorite Ramyeon which is the Korean version of instant Japanese ramen. In India we have Maggi, but if you visit South Korea it's ramyeon, which is the comfort food for all. In India, these days we are seeing little packets of ramyeon imported from Korea being sold. If you can't visit South Korea, make sure to buy a packet of these ( there are different flavors) and make them exactly as they say in the instructions and you will have hot flavourful instant noodles in no time. For extra taste, fry an egg and place it on top of noodles, and Tada !!!

2.  Jajangmyeon

Ever heard of noodles being cooked in black bean sauce? No? Well, this is that dish. A Korean-Chinese fusion dish, jajangmyeon uses thick handmade wheat noodles topped with raw cucumber slices and a mixture of salty black soybean paste (called chunjang (춘장)), diced pork, and vegetables. It is believed that these noodles were introduced by Chinese merchants but over time the flavor evolved to suit the Korean taste buds, just like we Indians tend to make everything desi to suit our masaledar taste buds !! You can easily make this at home as long as you have the black bean paste. Here's how you can make jajangmyeon noodles in black bean sauce

3. Kimchi

How can I forget Kimchi which has been around for more than 2,000 years, dating back to the Shilla Dynasty. Kimchi consists of Korean cabbage or napa cabbage, radish, pumpkin, onion, ginger, and scallion with chili powder, crushed garlic, and salted seafood, which is then left to ferment. Now, kimchi can be eaten as a side dish or can be added to anything to make the food delicious, example there is kimchi stew, kimchi noodles, kimchi pancakes, kimchi fried rice, etc. In villages (If you've seen Crash Landing on You ) women from households get together and make this delicious dish, which means it also brings people together and helps in building friendships. Kimchi has many health benefits since it contains different types of veggies.

4. Red rice cakes (tteokbokki)

One dish which I have been craving a lot for the past few days is this. A popular street food made with rice cakes and stir-fried in a spicy red sauce made with a combination of gochujang (고추장, Korean red chili pepper paste) and gochugaru (고추가루, Korean red chili pepper flakes) can be found in any streetside stall or can be easily made at home. When you visit Seoul don't forget to visit the streets where you will find other delicious-looking treats aside from tteokbokki.

5. Samgyeopsal

Samgyeopsal, 삼겹살, also known as three-layered pork is another staple Korean dish that requires little culinary skills, where chunky slices of pork belly are cooked on a grill at the diners’ table. It's one of a kind experience where you can see how the meat is being cooked and enjoy it fresh. It's then wrapped in lettuce or sesame leaf with dipping sauces and accompaniments such as button mushrooms, green chili peppers, green onions, raw onions, and garlic, as well as kimchi. If you have seen Hospital Playlist and Song Hwa's excitement when the pork is being prepared you will know what I am talking about. What’s more, there’s even a Samgyeopsal day (삼겹살데이, March 3rd), which was created to encourage pork belly BBQ consumption in Korea.

6. Korean fried chicken

Korean fried chicken with a bottle of soju (Korean wine) is everything one can ask for. Crispy fried chicken stir-fried in a sweet-spicy sauce, one of the most affordable dishes out there in South Korea. No K-drama is complete without a scene where these crispy bites are not shown.

7. Seolleongtang

Seolleongtang or Ox bone soup is very popular all year round in Korea, but especially in the winter. The soup has a distinguishable white milky color, a rich taste, and is filled with proteins and calcium. Seolleongtang is time-consuming to make; the ox bones are simmered over a low flame over a period of several hours to an entire day, to allow the flavor to be gradually extracted from the bones. The soup can be eaten alone or with a bowl of rice and kimchi.
